Looks like the secure user login system is going to have to wait a while as I only have a shared SSL certificate at the minute, meaning I can't use cookies between domains and so my idea for secure user authentication will not work.

I have read about secure AJAX login systems that utilise client-side authentication... but what about devices that do not support JavaScript? Either I have to accept that these users must transmit their login information securely or I buy a dedicated SSL certificate... Is it worth it though? I'll have to find out the price first. I would ideally prefer that the user's entire session is secure, especially given that user's may store their credentials for several different applications in their accounts...

More soon.

I actually meant 'RSS feeds', not 'BBC News'. Also, the snap.com search engine provides thumbnail previews of web pages (discovered via Netvibes). This might be worth investigating and implementing into CHUI.

Comment on Project Specification by Stephen Lang

I received the following feedback for my specification, thanks goes out to my supervisor for helping me along the way:

1. Does the project have an investigation / information review component?
YES

2. Does the project have a significant design / strategy component?
YES

3. Does the project have an analysis / evaluation component?
YES

4. Is the deliverable clearly identified and stated?
YES.

5. Is a critical reflection of the project identified?
YES.

6. Is the project of a suitable degree of difficulty?
YES. There is scope for any degree of difficulty, depending on the features which are included in the proposed system, and the rigour with which it is evaluated (by users other than the author!).

7. Does the specification show the appropriate level of communication?
YES.

8. Only a week is allocated to “Produce report on completion of project in the task plan. This is unrealistic; I assume that parts will be written up as soon as the relevant work has been done.

Comment on Research into customisable homepage interfaces by Stephen Lang

RE: Netvibes.

I've been using Netvibes non-stop since I discovered it. I was originally put down by how well it was built and the amount of features it supports (not to mention the extensibility via it's API), though now I see it as more of a challenge - sort of like a quality baseline.

One idea would be to add Facebook compatibility to CHUI, this is one thing that Netvibes does not currently have.

RE: Box.net's API.

I received a reply from them, saying that the API would be launching by November. It's still not launched though, I'll try contacting them again.
